What is the Bun Bang Fai Rocket Festival?
This ancient festival sees hundreds of locals and visitors come together to shoot home-made rockets high into the sky, all in honour of Phaya Taen, the god of rain. The festival is so important, the airspace above the region of Isaan in the north east of Thailand, is temporarily closed while the celebrations take place.
This incredible event sees over 50,000 visitors flock to the region each year to witness the spectacle. Teams from countries across the world come to compete in an international contest to see who has the most impressive rockets.
Need to know
The Rocket Festival usually takes place on the weekends in the middle of May, just before the start of the crop plantation period, marking Thailand's rainy season.
Did you know?
The first celebration took place centuries ago, and it is presumed to have evolved from Buddhist fertility rituals which were held to celebrate the coming of the monsoon season. The festival is also reflective of traditional Lao folk culture.
