What is the Burning Of Zozobra?
The Burning of Zozobra is a unique cultural event staged annually by the Kiwanis Club of Santa Fe as an unforgettable annual ending to summer.
Each year, New Mexicans gather around a giant burning effigy, casting off their bad memories into the consuming bonfire. The effigy is made of muslin and stuffed with hundreds of bags of shredded paper, that are actually print outs of the crowd's 'glooms'. Zozobra is a 50ft dark and eerie character, part ghost and part monster.
The festive crowd watch as the thousands of paper 'glooms' (anything from love letters, parking tickets, divorce papers, hurt feelings and more!) go up in smoke.
