The origins of this Carnival go as far back as 1394, making it one of the most ancient carnivals in Europe. It was in that year that the Knights of Malta brought the relics of St. Stephen from St. StephensAbbey to Monopoli.
To celebrate this event, every year a majestic carnival is organized in Putignano with a traditional mask of Farinella, a clown wearing the city colours, opens the parade.
Farinella is also a traditional food similar to chickpea and barley flatbread that is the main delicacy of the Carnival.
The event even includes workshops for kids, literary, entertainment and live performances.
