During the late 19th century, more than 700 Czech and Slovak families came to live in Virginia.
The greatest number settled in the counties of Prince George, Dinwiddie and Chesterfield, mostly on farmlands thathad been abandonedafter the Civil War. Others settled in Charles City, Hanover, Henrico, Greensville and NewKent.
