Farsang Carnival

0 Reviews

Farsang, which literally translates to the carnival is a colorful festival period in Hungary, which starts on January 6th or the last day of Christmas until Ash Wednesday.

In the old times, Farsang was about pagan celebrations and driving off demons.  The tradition of celebrations continues to the present time, but with feasts, drinking and parties.  Immeasurable amounts of meats and vegetables are consumed during this period, but the must-try festival food is the Szalagos Farsangi Fánk or the ribboned carnival doughnut.

One of the most unique farsang traditions is the Busojaras, a series of events in the town of Mohacs, meant to scare away the winter demons.  It is even listed as an Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO.
