The feast day of Our Lady of Guadalupe commemorates the traditional story of her first appearance to Juan Diego on the hill of Tepeyac near Mexico City in 1531.
The main celebration takes place in Mexico City, where thousands of pilgrims converge on the Basilica de Guadalupe to pay tribute to Mexico's patron saint. The Basilica is one of the most visited Catholic pilgrimage sites in the world.
The square in front of the Basilica is a stage for singing, dancing, and celebration in the very best Mexican style. Parents dress their children in traditional clothing and take them to be blessed on this day.
Whether you are of the Catholic faith or not, this is an experience you will never forget if you visit the Basilica in Mexico City on December 12th.
