What is the Mid-Autumn Festival?

A major event on the Chinese calendar, the Mid-Autumn or Moon Festival, marks the end of the autumn harvest and is celebrated on the fifteenth day of the eighth month of the lunar calendar when the moon is brightest.

The festival is a celebration of thanksgiving and families gather to hang lanterns and share (and eat!) mooncakes. The lanterns are symbolic of lighting a path to prosperity and good fortune. This festival is the second most important – after Lunar New Year – on the Chinese calendar and is thought to have origins going back at least 3,000 years.

Need to Know

If you are wanting to see the best lantern displays, head to Chinatown or Gardens By The Bay - you won’t be disappointed.

Did You Know?

Mooncakes are a Chinese dessert – a rich pasty traditionally filled with sweet bean paste, lotus seed and a whole egg yolk – which is symbolic of the moon. These days Singapore’s finest restaurants and bakeries create a huge variety of flavors from durian to champagne truffle!
