What is the Oxford Cambridge Boat Race?

There is nothing more quintessentially English than the annual Oxford Cambridge boat race. The historic race runs from Putney to Mortlake in south west London around a long loop in the Thames and demonstrates strength and endurance from its tough rowing crews. There is a women's race and a men's race.

The competing university teams are both known as 'blues' with Cambridge in light blue and Oxford in dark. This exhilarating event attracts over a quarter of a million spectators to the banks of the Thames.

Need to know

Putney is the location of the start of The Boat Race with the crews based in Boathouses along Putney Embankment in the lead up to the event. There are good viewing points along the tow paths on either side of the river in Putney to watch the race from.

There are also two fan parks, in Fulham and Hammersmith, that are set up with huge screens to watch the thrilling race with friends and family. The fan parks also have delicious street food and drinks available for purchase.
