Palio di Asti is a bareback horse race for the palio that dates back to the 13th century, held in the Piemonte town of Asti.
The race is preceded by a parade with participants in period costume and special events are also held on the days leading up to the actual event.
During the days preceding the Palio, the town is decorated with the flags of the different districts and the colours of the flag wavers, the propitiatory dinners, the Palio traditional market stalls and the horse trials on the horse tracks set out in Piazza Alfieri.
