Thaipoosam Cavadee festival is celebrated by all Hindus at temples throughout Mauritius.
Held annually between January and February, or on the full moon of the Tamil calendar, this is considered to be a public holiday in the country. Mauritius is said to be the only African country where Hinduism is the largest practiced religion.
The streets are filled with devotees carrying flower-covered wooden arches and pots of milk. Cleansing rituals at local rivers, vows of silence and sacred piercings can also be seen being practiced by devotees.
Visitors will be amazed at the beautiful arts crafts of local devotees and the devotional songs that are played throughout the day and the processions in the name of Lord Muruga.
