Dongzhi Festival - (Winter Solstice)

0 Reviews

The Dongzhi or Winter Solstice Festival has its origins in the Chinese concept of yin and yang, which represents balance and harmony in life.

It is celebrated on the day with the shortest daytime and longest nighttime because, after the winter solstice, the days will become longer.  In ancient Chinese beliefs, it means the positive (yang) qualities such as light and warmth will be taking over the darkness and cold, which are qualities of the negative (yin).

Traditionally, some families in China gather together to eat a special meal, visit ancestral tombs, and worship their ancestors for this festival.

Different customs are observed depending on the region.   Some eat dumplings or dumpling soup, while others will have dumplings made from glutinous rice flour.  Other traditions even include offering nine-layer cakes or cakes in different animal shapes.

An event not to be missed!
