What is the London Marathon?

Every year up to 50,000 participants travel from around the world to take on London's annual 26.2-mile (42.2-km) footrace through the heart of the capital city.

The world-famous London Marathon route has remained largely unchanged since the inaugural race back in 1981. It encompasses lots of London's iconic landmarks, both old and new. The course has starting points in Greenwich Park and Blackheath and weaves its way through the streets of South London before crossing the river at the Tower Bridge. It then moves east and circles the Isle of Dogs before turning west leading towards the legendary finish line on the Mall near Buckingham Palace. 

Whether you are planning to take on the challenge and run the London Marathon or provide some much-needed support from the sidelines, you are in for a treat. Spend the day soaking up the electric atmosphere and watch as the city becomes one big party celebrating triumph and endurance of the human spirit.

Need to know

To get a place to run the London Marathon you will need to enter the ballot around a year in advance or apply directly with a charity for one of their spots which has fundraising requirements.
